Just back from seeing 300: Rise of an Empire. Two good things can be said about it: 1) I liked how they interwove the plot with part one, so that it was less of a sequel than a meanwhile-quel. 2) Eva Green. Stunning woman, of course, but I enjoyed her meta-narrative role even more than I enjoyed her aesthetic properties. While watching her slap, kill and humiliate her brutish male underlings and opponents, I couldn’t help but imagine a room full of producers and writers beamingly congratulate themselves on the progressive message they packed into their butchery of a film. We get it, Hollywood, we get it. There were important women in the ancient world, too, and we admire you for your noble endeavour to educate us on our lacking cultural perceptions. Now please, show us more abs and swords and blood.
